Are many off -licences open 24/7?

31 October, 2008

Q How many drinks stores have been granted licences for 24-hour opening?

A Official figures report that 5,100 licences have been issued under the Licensing Act 2003, which gives applicants the option of 24-hour opening. Fewer than 500 of these went to pubs, with the majority of round-the-clock licences being issued to supermarkets. Not all retailers who were granted 24-hour drinks sales have bothered to take advantage of their new-found rights, yet none of this has prevented the tabloid media from informing its readers that Britain now has a 24-hour drinking culture.

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
