The Malbec producer, from the Cahors region of France, is introducing UK consumers to the Chateau de Haute-Serre Grand Vin Seigneur AOC Cahors 2012 (rsp: £18.50), and Chateau Lafleur de Haute-Serre AOC Cahors 2014 (rsp: £12.75).
The first, a Malbec, has a very dark colour with crimson highlights and a “powerful bouquet of Morello cherry”, while the Lafleur has a “very fine nose and dark red brilliance”. It is described as a “feminine wine with structure and elegance”.
Chateau de Haute-Serre is run by Georges and Bertrand-Gabriel Vigouroux. In 1975 Georges re-introduced the Malbec grape to Cahors, and it was recognised as a true ‘Cru’ from the first release of the AOC Cahors in 1976.
The vineyard’s wines are considered to be immediately identifiable by their deep ruby colour and aromas of candied red fruit, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla.
In 2010 the family added a thousand truffle trees to the estate in order to cultivate its own supply of the world famous ‘black diamond’. The vineyard’s own restaurant offers pairs regional dishes, including the estate’s truffles, with its own wines. Haute-Serre is committed to wine tourism, which includes vineyard tours, accommodation, tasting workshops and cookery courses.
