Olympic Games set to provide a further boost for soaring Brazilian wine category

Sales of Brazilian wine are up 106% in the UK and retailers sold as much wine from the country in the first three months of 2016 as they did in all of 2015, according to Wines of Brasil.

The category took off in earnest in the UK in 2014, when Waitrose and Marks & Spencer started listing Brazilian wines to coincide with the World Cup.

They continue to list four wines apiece from the South American nation, while Oddbins stocks the Aurora sparkling Moscato and independent merchants have championed premium offerings.

Wines of Brasil is anticipating a further boost as the eyes of the world turn to Rio de Janeiro for the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games tonight.

Judy Kendrick, who runs the UK arm of the generic body, said: “The UK continues to be one of Brazil’s priority markets and, amongst these markets, it shows by far the largest increase in exports for this quarter. It looks like it’s going to be another great year for Brazilian wines in the UK just as was for the World Cup in 2014.”

Wines of Brasil is teaming up with OLN to offer independent wine merchants the chance to wine a four-day trip to the Brazil to visit its wine regions and sample some of its best wines.
