Lidl’s Glen Alda crowned ‘World’s Best’ just five months after launch

18 March, 2016

Lidl has announced it took home its 1,000th award last night after picking up a trophy at the World Whiskies Awards in London this week.

The supermarket  retailer won a trophy for the ‘World’s Best Blended Limited Release Whisky’ for its Glen Alba 22-Year Sherry Cask Finish Blended own-brand scotch whisky, which had already been awarded ‘Winner’ in the 21-year and over category before it received the accolade of ‘World’s Best’.

The premium whisky, which was launched in stores in November 2015 as part of its Christmas collection, is priced at £29.99 for 70cl. The whisky is more than 80% cheaper than other whiskies which were competing for the same title.

Lidl’s Queen Margo 3-Year Blended Scotch Whisky and Ben Bracken 22-Year Islay Malt also won in their respective categories.

Lidl UK spirits buyer Hannah Cvetkovic said: “It is a fantastic achievement to be recognised for our premium label Scotch whisky only five months after launching the range. More and more people are recognising Lidl as a bona fide quality whisky retailer and this is evident in the uplift in sales we have seen year on year as old perceptions continue to change.”

Last year the supermarket was named winner of the ‘Supermarket Own Branded Spirits Range of the Year’, at the 2015 International Spirits Challenge.
