poaches Hefford from The Good Wine Shop

On-line drinks retailer,, has appointed David Hefford as its new wine product manager.

Hefford joins from the buying team at West London-based wine merchant, The Good Wine Shop, where he oversaw a 1,000-strong wine list.

Previous experience includes eight years at Majestic, where he was twice awarded manager of the year, as well as stints at Oddbins and Threshers.

He also won the Vintners Bursary as a result of outstanding Level Three WSET results.

Hefford will work alongside’s co-founder, Esme Johnstone.

Johnstone is a former co-owner of Château des Sours. He founded the online business in 2007 with Everyman Books publisher David Campbell, who holds a Légion d’Honneur and established the Guide Hachette des Vins in 1985.

Hefford said: “My move to was sparked by the fantastic opportunity the role offered to buy wines direct from European vineyards and to pass on the wines  – at exceptional prices – and the stories and passion behind them to customers.

“There is so much added-⁠value in all of that, at every level.”

Hefford's ultimate ambition is to run his own winery in France.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
