New brews from Black Sheep

Yorkshire’s Black Sheep Brewery has launched three brews designed to appeal to experimental craft beer drinkers.

Pathmaker is a 5.6% abv pale ale brewed with Chinook hops designed to celebrate Paul Theakston, who created Black Sheep in 1992; Moose Jaw is a 5.2% abv crystal weiss beer developed in honour of Paul’s father Frank Theakston; and Glug M’Glug is a 6.2% abv dark IPA brewed with Cascade hops and dark malts, named after a mythical giant of the Yorkshire Dales, invented by the other grandfather of Paul’s sons Rob and Jo, who are now managing director and sales and marketing director of the brewery.

All three come in 33cl bottles and were developed in Black Sheep’s five-barrel microbrewery.

Jo Theakston said: “When Dad established the brewery, it was to challenge, create and innovate. This ethos is at the heart of the craft ale movement today.

“Quality craftsmanship continues to be at the heart of what we do and the brewing team have once again come up trumps with this new 33cl bottled range, which takes us into new areas of the market.

“Black Sheep always has been a family business, born from six generations of brewing, so it was only natural to delve into our past for inspiration. The stories are many and we wanted to support our new beers with something real and meaningful to us.”

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
