Meantime gets in Wimbledon mood with strawberry saison beer

24 June, 2015

London’s Meantime brewery is looking to tap into Wimbledon fever in the capital with the launch of a beer inspired by the tennis tournament’s signature strawberries and cream.

The limited edition Summer Saison takes its beer style cue from the fruity pale ales of southern Belgium and has been made from Suffolk malted barley with an infusion of puréed locally-sourced strawberries during maturation.

Head of quality and innovation Ciaran Giblin said: “The start of summer offers us the opportunity to experiment with an exciting range of seasonal flavours.

“We’ve taken the very best seasonal British fruits, malts and hops to create a wonderfully unique and refreshing summer brew.

“Taking inspiration from the iconic Wimbledon style strawberries and cream, we wanted to create something that had all the hallmarks of this classic combination, while remaining authentic to the saison style.”

He added: “This hazy blonde beer is best enjoyed on a sunny afternoon with or without tennis.”

The beer is packed in 33cl bottles.

Wimbledon fortnight starts next Monday.

Meantime is in the process of being bought by Peroni and Pilsner Urquell brewer SAB Miller.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
