Tesco set to bring in new MW amid wine team shake up

15 April, 2015

James Davis MW is expected to head Tesco's wine operations

Tesco is on the brink of announcing swathes of changes to its wine buying team, including a series of redundancies and the appointment of a new MW to bolster the department.

James Davis MW is understood to be moving from senior wine buyer at Greene King to join the Tesco team, reporting to head of BWS Gavin Warburton.

Davis has worked for the pub group for seven years, but was previously wine buying manager at Tesco from 2004 to 2007 and has also held a similar buying role at Costco.

His appointment would again put a Master of Wine at the retailer’s helm, following in the footsteps of Laura Jewell MW, who moved to the top job at Wine Australia UK earlier this year.

Tesco will also announce a number of redundancies to the buying team following a head office review.

UK and group wine category manager Alain Guilpain is believed to be leaving the business along with Lucy Clements, wine product development manager, who is moving to Australia to take up a buying role with supermarket chain Coles.

Graham Nash and Charlotte Lemoine are understood to be staying in their roles as product development managers, while James Griswood will continue with a sabbatical he took up with Origin Wines in South Africa in January.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
