Craft beer's soaring popularity recognised by ONS

18 March, 2015

The soaring popularity of craft beer and e-cigarettes has been recognised by the Office for National Statistics, which added them to the virtual shopping basket it uses to measure UK inflation.

Every year the ONS alters the basket to keep pace with changing spending habits.

The statisticians decided to include craft beer for 2015 because “speciality beers and ales are currently extremely fashionable”.

They added that e-cigarettes are gaining in popularity as both an alternative to tobacco and as a quitting aid.

They are joined in the new basket by headphones, sweet potatoes and phone accessories, with satnavs and yoghurt drinks making way.

Welcoming the wine rookie

It’s all true. Wine writers loaf around in a state of partial inebriation and partial undress, bitching about having to taste free wine all day and using recondite words like malolactic, terroir and recondite.
