Laura Jewell quits Tesco for Wine Australia

27 November, 2014

Laura Jewell MW is leaving Tesco to take up the top job at Wine Australia in the UK.

Jewell is departing after four years at the retailer where she is responsible for wine product development and oversees sourcing and blending.

The move leaves Tesco looking for a new wine head and comes while BWS boss Dan Jago remains suspended from his post amid the company's on-going inquiry into its accounting.

Jewell has held numerous positions within the wine trade with stints at Sainsbury's, HwCg and Spar UK.

In 2012 she was also appointed chair of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust.

During her time at Tesco Jewell has significantly enhanced its own-label proposition, ramping up the Finest range and introducing less-known varietals.

She has also advanced its social media and interactive consumer tastings, hosting online events for customers and becoming the personality behind the range in its in-store magazine.

Jewell's appointment follows the death of Yvonne May, who had steered Wine Australia since 2011.
