Naked Wines saw pre-tax profits rise by 56% during 2013, according to new figures published by the online retailer.

Turnover increased 11% from £34.9 million in 2012 to £38,7 million in 2013, while pre-tax profits jumped from £963,000 to £1.5 million.

It now has 141,000 “angels” in the UK. They pay £20 a month by direct debit, this money is invested in independent wine producers and the angels can then buy their wines at reduced prices.

The retailer, which was founded by Rowan Gormley in 2008, has recently been forced to apply waiting lists as interest in becoming an angel surges and it struggles to find enough wine to meet demand.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
