Wine Australia's Yvonne May dies

01 September, 2014

Wine Australia regional director for the UK & Europe Yvonne May has died after an illness of several months.

In a statement Andreas Clark, the body’s acting chief executive, said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce that our dearly loved colleague and friend Yvonne May, who has for the last few months been battling illness, passed away over the weekend.

“Yvonne was a tireless and passionate ambassador for our Australian wine community in her role as regional director for the UK & Europe. We were richer for having her in our lives but now poorer with her leaving us much too soon.

“While those who knew her well will be grieving her loss, she would not want us to wallow and we should all continue to be inspired with how she embraced life and its opportunities.

“Our hearts go out to Yvonne’s husband David and her family during this difficult and sad time.”

May has asked that people who wish to send flowers donate to the drinks industry charity, The Benevolent, instead.

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
