Cox team takes on Bordeaux marathon

03 July, 2014

A team of wine trade professionals is set to run the Médoc marathon in memory of Michael Cox, the former head of Wines of Chile UK who died of cancer earlier this year.

“Team Cox” aims to raise £10,000 for trade charities The Benevolent and the Vintners’ Foundation.

The runners are Michael’s widow Lynne Cox, writers and broadcasters Peter Richards MW and Susie Barrie MW (pictured), Eduardo Chadwick, Francisco Baettig and Andres Izquierdo from Viña Errazuriz, Alvaro Arriagada from Wines of Chile, Greg Sherwood MW and Vicky Thompson from London wine merchant Handford Wines and Richard Dare from Avery’s Wine Merchants.

The Médoc marathon takes place in the village of Pauillac on September 13 and its route takes runners through some of Bordeaux’s famous vineyards. The race encourages a festive atmosphere and dressing up, and Team Cox will dress up to represent the two chateaux that are hosting them for the weekend, Château Brane-Cantenac and Château Langoa-Barton.

Richards said: “We want to celebrate Michael’s wonderful life, generous nature and fun-loving spirit of adventure in running this fantastic marathon through the great vineyards of Bordeaux. We know Michael would have approved, not just of the fact it’s a marathon that features red wine, oysters and a fancy dress theme but also because we’re doing it for two great causes very close to his heart.

"We have a fine and plucky team – some Chilean, some English, one South African, all skilled in the art of claret – and we would all dearly love and appreciate any support, in whatever form it may take, so we can achieve something special in memory of a fabulous man.”

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
