Enter the Benevolent Bake Off

The Benevolent is calling on cake enthusiasts to raise cash by entering its Bake Off.

From April 7 to 17 bakers can enter cakes, biscuits, buns or tarts by delivering them to the Oval during the judging of the International Wine Challenge.

There will be prizes for the best decorated and most tasty cakes, and the overall winner will get a Champagne hamper worth £100.

Money raised will go to members of the trade facing a variety of difficult circumstances including serious illness, disability, issues with debt or family crisis such as a seriously ill partner or child.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
