Edinburgh gin launches

The first gin to be distilled in Edinburgh for 150 years has launched in the Scottish capital.

Pickering’s Gin is distilled, bottled and labelled in Edinburgh’s Summerhall distillery to an original Bombay recipe, hand-written on a piece of paper dated 17 July 1947.

The recipe was kept secret until Pickering’s founders Matt Gammell and Marcus Pickering used it to create Pickering’s Gin.

The small batch gin contains nine botanicals including juniper, coriander, cardamom and fennel, and is packaged in a 70cl chunky square glass bottle, rrp £29.50.

Pickering said: “The idea has been brewing for around five years and with the growing trend, popularity and resurgence of gin, now seemed the ideal time to introduce Pickering’s Gin to the market.” 

Gammell added: “We’ve been working on the distillery since last summer and are confident that the new small batch gin brings something new to the market giving better choice for hotels, bars, wholesalers and consumers.”

The still used for the gin is to be open to visitors, with tours and guided tastings available.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
