PLB takes on Western Australian winery

PLB has added Western Australian winery Capel Vale to its portfolio and will distribute a four-strong range across the UK.

The range includes a Margaret River Chardonnay, a Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, a Mount Barker Riesling and a Mount Barker Shiraz, all priced at £14.49.

The winery was established in 1974 by Peter Pratten, who is head winemaker and runs Capel Vale with wife Elizabeth and chief executive Simon Pratten.

Peter Pratten said: “The Regional Series wines are grown where the optimal expression of its variety can be achieved. Site and varietal selection is the result of more than thirty years of research, trial and observation of vine performance in Capel Vale’s various vineyards. There is a real focus on balance, complexity and elegant fruit flavours.”

PLB’s portfolio has undergone sweeping changes in recent months, losing wineries Trinchero, McWilliam’s, Vergelegen and Viña Montes, and adding wineries including Capel Vale and Bosman Family Vineyards from South Africa.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
