Portugal's D&F Wines goes upmarket

A Portuguese wine company is launching a premium range of estate-grown wines after more than 30 years supplying the volume end of the market.

D&F Portuguese Wines was founded in 1977 and has been handling high-volume brands such as Ramada since then.

Now managing director Fausto Ferraz is set to unveil a more upmarket range targeted at independendents and the on-trade.

He said: “I want to showcase the range and quality of premium and fine wines which Portugal now produces countrywide and I believe that D&F has the potential to be a leader in this category.” 

The range is made up of 25 wines made from native varieties grown in well-known and up-and-coming parts of Portugal.

It includes Quinta do Regueiro Blend, a non-vintage Alvarinho from award-winning winemaker Paulo Rodrigues, and Conde de Oeiras Carcavelos from a tiny, near-extinct fortified wine DOC.

The company will showcase its range at a tasting on London on April 15, where there will also be masterclasses by Wine Detective Sarah Ahmed and master sommelier João Pires.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
