The winery is toasting its 25th anniversary from now until autumn 2014, and is kicking off the festivities with the launch of Taita – a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with Carmenère and Syrah grown in glacial soils in Marchigüe in the Colchagua Valley.
The wine takes its name from an affectionate nickname for “father”, and is dedicated to winery founder Douglas Murray, who died in 2010.
Montes is also introducing new labels for Montes Alpha and the Montes Classic Series, featuring the Montes angels but “in a revitalised elegant, modern design”.
There will be a series of events around the world to mark the occasion.
A spokesman said: “With the birth of Viña Montes, founders Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand revolutionised the Chilean wine industry, playing a pivotal role in raising the awareness of quality Chilean wines around the world. The Cabernet Sauvignon from their flagship Montes Alpha line has become famous as the first premium, yet affordable wine to be exported from Chile. In 1988, Viña Montes broke a lot of moulds and today they continue on a course of innovation.
“Viña Montes led the charge of premium quality producers making wines for the international palate and in time became one of the five major exporters of Chilean wine. In more recent years, the company has done the same with its Argentine winery, Kaiken and Angel wines from California, still under the guidance, a quarter of a century later, of Aurelio Montes.”
