The West Sussex producer was the first to realise the potential of England’s chalky soil for growing the three celebrated varieties found in Champagne – Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay – in 1988.
Since then English sparkling wine has become an internationally acclaimed brand, while Nielsen figures show it grew 97% by value and 69% by volume in the off-trade in the year to February 2013.
Eric Heerema, Nyetimber’s owner and chief executive officer, said: “Nyetimber’s first vines were planted in 1988 so to mark the special occasion of our 25th year, it is very appropriate that we release Nyetimber’s finest Classic Cuvee ever. With the 2009 vintage, [Cherie Spriggs’] talent as a winemaker is more evident than ever.”
Spriggs added: “2009 is the finest vintage of Classic Cuvee ever produced by the House. 2009 was an exceptional year in terms of quantity and quality, but we also felt it was absolutely necessary to leave this wine in our cellars for more than three years so that the wine could gain added depth and complexity before release. We do not believe in releasing our wines until they are ready.”
The wine has an abv of 12% and offers apricot and bread flavours on the palate, which continue on a long finish.
