Fuller's recreates strong ale from 1966

Fuller’s has once again delved into its brewing history to produce the fourth beer in its Past Masters range.

The 7.3% abv Past Masters 1966 Strong Ale is replicated from a recipe created in the year the England football team won the World Cup.

The Fuller’s brew books have recorded each beer the London brewery has ever created, from basic ingredients down to minute details such as the time of day it was first brewed and the air temperature.

Strong Ale is made up of pale ale malt, maize, Goldings and Fuggles hops – which are added to the brew both early and late – as well as a blend of rich cane sugars and dark cane molasses.
Fuller’s said it produces a rich ruby ale with “an initial spicy banana aroma followed by a rounded middle palate, showing notes of plum and stone fruit, followed by a velvety finish, warming with a hint of caramel”.

Head Brewer, John Keeling said: “We are so lucky to have our all of these fantastic recipes written down by my brewing predecessors. Importantly, we recreate the ingredients and processes to follow the recipe as closely as possible – it really is a glimpse into our unique brewing history.

"I’ve really enjoyed looking back at my predecessors’ work to see how we can bring the recipes to life.

“We’re already thinking about the next brew, but as there’s a stack of brew books to search through, who knows what year the next one will be from.”

Past Masters Strong Ale is available at £4.50 for a 50cl bottle.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride.
