Harrods opens new luxury wine and spirits department

Jerobaums of £18,000 Cristal Champagne, first growths and vertical selections of Chateau Margaux and Petrus and a whisky collection worth almost £1 million are on sale at Harrod’s new wine and spirits department.

The new 7,000 sq ft lower ground floor department is divided into various sections the Champagne Room, the Wine Room, the Spirits Room and the Cigar Room.

Within the Wine Room there are old world and new world sections, a temperature-controlled wine vault and an area called the Large Format Bottle zone – where collectors can choose between a range of sizes from magnums and jeroboams to imperials and 18-litre melchiors.

The luxury retailer has increased its spirits range by 40% and the jewel in the crown is the Dalmore Paterson Collection.

It comprises 12 of the world’s rarest whiskies, each selected by The Dalmore’s master distiller Richard Paterson, and has a price tag of £987,500.

Each bottle comes in a handmade crystal decanter, with a silver engraving by luxury jeweler Hamilton & Inches, and the collection is presented in a wooden cabinet, specially designed by one of Britain’s leading cabinet makers, Gavin Robertson, in a 700-hour project.

Bruce Langlands, director of foods at Harrods, said: “The new department is an opportunity to improve an increasingly diverse range of products and to cement the longstanding relationship between Harrods and the world's finest drinks producers.

“This fantastic renovation really reflects the mutual strive for continual and consistent quality.”

The store now offers around 3,000 wines and spirits.

It’s all true. Wine writers loaf around in a state of partial inebriation and partial undress, bitching about having to taste free wine all day and using recondite words like malolactic, terroir and recondite.
