Corks Out owner bags trip Down Under

The owners of Corks Out have won a trip Down Under after winning a competition run by Wine Australia and OLN.

Ruth Yates, who runs the Cheshire chain with her husband Richard, scooped the generic body’s Wine Merchant of the Year 2013 title. The award was created to give recognition to those demonstrating a passion for Australian wines.

A three-month promotion across the five-store company helped Yates stand 

out from the rest, and her interest in Australian wines also shone through, according to the judges.

Yvonne May, Wine Australia’s UK, Ireland and Europe director, said: “Corks Out is a buzzy and deservedly successful business.”

She highlighted Corks Out’s “out- standing” effort in promoting Australian Wine, which included newsletters and in-store displays, while tutored events embraced the Australian culture.

Yates said: “Australian wine is going from strength to strength and it’s going to continue to develop.

“They haven’t just sat there and rolled out the same old grape varieties and styles – they’ve changed with the palate, which people now desire.

“Watch this space. Australia is a sleep- ing giant in terms of where it’s going.”

Ruth and Richard will fly to Australia for their dedicated regional trade visit in April.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
