A Sussex vineyard is planning to bring what it claims is a new concept in English wine to the market in 2016.

Henners, based at Herstmonceaux in East Sussex, said its Multi-Vintage concept would be a blend of its best wines over multiple vintages. Each wine will be selected for its ageing potential and set aside. The chosen wines are being cellared in bottle at partial pressure on the lees until the company decides they are ready to be added to Multi-Vintage blends in years to come.

Henners said the cellaring process would allow the wines to develop complexity and prevent oxidation, and provide a different proposition from non-vintage wines, where the majority of the base is from one vintage with small amounts of other vintages blended in.

Owner and winemaker Lawrence Warr said the pioneering project showed the producer’s “passion for crafting the very finest sparkling wines”.

He added: “The broad palette of outstanding reserve wines from multiple vintages allows us to create something very special.”

Henners was planted in 2007 and released its first vintage, the 2009, last November, with distribution through Boutinot. It is adding Vintage Reserve and Rosé from the same vintage this month.

The property comprises 4ha of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with plans to add a further 2ha.

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
