Oxford Wine Co to open café concept

13 February, 2013

Oxford Wine Co is to open a café concept in the city at Easter.

Oxford Wine Café will occupy the site of the former Summertown Wine Café – operated in northern Oxford by Rob Malcolm since 2005 until its closure last September.

The new incarnation will sell a House Selection for on-premise consumption, plus a Special Selection which will change every two months.

PR and fine wine manager Theo Sloot’s Thirsty Thursday tastings from the company’s existing Oxford shop will be rebranded Tasty Tuesdays in the new outlet.

Customer views from these tastings will be used to mould the make-up of the next Special Selection.

Wine dinners with journalists, winemakers and MWs will also be held in a nearby restaurant.

The café will have 25 wines for sales by-the-glass and a 200-strong line-up for off-sales.

There will be a two-tier pricing structure for bottles for on- and off-sales.

All on-premise wines will be served in Riedel glasses.

Sloot said: “The previous owners were only able to buy in very small quantities and make very little margin, but we’re in a much better position because we already ship so much wine direct. We can offer prices well below what they were doing and still make a decent margin.”

There will also be a small selection of locally-produced beers and eight top-end spirits.

The café will sell coffee and pastries from 8.30am and trade until 11pm, with tapas style food and two hot main course dishes served later in the day.

The site has a garden and will provide free wi-fi.

Oxford Wine Co was Independent Wine Retailer of the Year in the Drinks Retailing Awards 2012.

So, George The Bear is back. It’s hard for some of us oldies to fathom, but there are those under, say, 40 who can’t actually remember Hofmeister and feel the cultural jolt supplied by the return of both the bear and the beer whose marketing campaigns it used to front.
