Majestic posts narrow sales rise over Christmas

08 January, 2013

Majestic Wine called the Christmas trading period "challenging" despite posting a narrow sales rise.

The wine retailer reported a total sales growth of 5.1%, while like-for-like sales - which exclude the performance of shops that were not open last Christmas - rose 1.1%.

Last year, however, the group reported a total sales rise of 8% and a like-for-like sales growth of 4%, leaving chief executive Steve Lewis a little downbeat.

He said: "While we saw encouraging sales growth over the period, the Christmas trading season was challenging with many consumers leaving their shopping until the very last moment."

The performance over Christmas brings the group's like-for-like UK store sales growth to 0.8% for the first 39 weeks of the financial year.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas
