Jubilee boosted gin and fizz – WSTA report

Sales of sparkling wine and gin were given a boost by the Jubilee – but total sales of alcohol dropped 1% in volume in the year to July 21.

Nielsen figures from the Wine & Spirit Trade Association in its latest Market Report show value sales of alcohol up 3% at £14.6 billion, an increase that brings the trade little cheer against a backdrop of duty increases.

Gin was a bright spot, up 7% in value in the off-trade and 2% in volume, while sparkling wine grew 5% over the year and 12% in the last 12 weeks of the year, the period which included the Jubilee.

WSTA chief executive Miles Beale said: “The mood of the nation has been very positive over the summer thanks to the Jubilee and the build-up to the Olympics, so it’s perhaps not surprising to see an increase in sales of those products associated with celebration.

“Even though overall alcohol sales are declining, some categories are showing encouraging signs of recovery, which is good news for the trade.”

The WSTA said sales of wine in take-home were down 3% in volume, with Spain (+14%) and Italy (+9%) bucking the trend on the back of retailer exclusive wines.

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
