Portuguese importers honour retailers

Majestic, Tanners and the Wine Society have been honoured at an awards ceremony for those in the UK who make an outstanding contribution to supporting Portuguese wine.

The Association of Portuguese Wine Importers named Majestic national retailer of the year, Tanners independent retailer of the year and the Wine Society online or mail order retailer of the year.

TV personality Olly Smith was named Portuguese Wine Journalist of the Year at the AWPI’s annual awards ceremony, while fellow TV star Oz Clarke was given an award recognising his longstanding contributions to Portuguese wines in the UK.

Wine writer and International Wine Challenge co-chair Charles Metcalfe was given a special medal from the Portuguese government recognising his longstanding support and commitment to promoting Portuguese wine and food abroad.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Portuguese ambassador Dr Joăo de Vallera at the Portuguese embassy in London.

Nandos was named restaurant of the year.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
