Spirited Wines buys Nicolas estate

02 February, 2012

Spirited Wines, the company which bought the Nicolas shops outside London in 2010, has bought the remaining Nicolas estate from French wine company Castel.

Nicolas currently has 43 shops within the M25, while Spirited Wines has 14 shops across England, Wales and Scotland.

Spirited Wines owner Benoit Thouvenin used to work for Nicolas and notably set up the chain’s successful shop-cum-wine bar in Canary Wharf.

He has changed the focus of the estate outside London to offer a broader range of wines from Europe and the New World alongside a strong French selection.

Thouvenin told OLN he plans to keep a few Nicolas shops in their current format, while others will rebrand as Spirited Wines.

At this stage he could not confirm whether he would keep all 43 shops open. “Nothing has been decided,” he said.

Thouvenin added: “We have tripled our estate in one day. I’m excited about all of it and working out how to make a success of it.

“It’s a great opportunity for us. We finalised our changes in Spirited Wines last year, we think the format is good and we felt it was the right time to have more stores.”

Richard Hemming: Taking stock of UK wine retail

My 12-times table is ninja fast. Not just up to 10, either – that’s kid’s stuff. I’m talking dozens of dozens, hundreds even. I’ve even got favourites: 38 times 12 is 456 – pleasingly sequential; 50 times 12 is 600 – an easy one, but with satisfying roundness. Then there’s the evergreen classic 74 times 12, giving not just two but three fat ladies, 888.
