Lack of publicity 'puts staff at risk'

The Scottish Grocers' Federation says shopworkers could be put in danger by lack of publicity about the increase in the legal age for purchasing tobacco to 18.

SGF chief executive John Drummond said shopworkers faced increase risk of intimidation and violence from 16 and 17-year-olds unaware of the change, which is due to come into effect on Oct 1.

Drummond said: "Instead of undertaking an advertising campaign or working with youngsters in schools to kick the habit, the Scottish government has been paralysed by procedure. It is shopworkers, not the police or politicians who will be expected to enforce the law. Unlike in England, where the government has been working to get the message out there, we have heard a deafening silence."
