Following a request from the Wine & Spirit Trade Association, the guidelines now recommend that the number of units displayed on labels be calculated for the whole container, not for a typical serving.
The guidelines have also been adjusted to allow for a typical serving for wine to be 125ml and spirits or liqueurs, 25ml.
For beer, cider and RTDs above 500ml, the Portman will allow them to be classed as multi-serve, but the typical serving must be 284ml or half a pint.
In view of the Government's recent labelling proposals the industry is also being advised to put "UK" before "units".
