Study reveals drinking dangers

One in five adults in England is drinking enough to damage their health, according to a study into drinking habits.

Figures released by the North West Public Health Observatory claim that between 14 per cent and 26 per cent of adults are drinking at "hazardous" levels - determined as those regularly drinking more than the government's unit guidelines. Between 3 and 9 per cent of adults were estimated to be drinking at levels that could "significantly" harm them.

First organic/Fairtrade beer

The Co-op is launching the first nationally listed bottled beer that is both organic and Fairtrade. Brewed by UK microbrewery Freeminer, Organic Fairtrade Premium Ale ale uses organic, floor malted, handmade malt and traditional organic hops from Germany, blended with Fairtrade Demerara. It has a 5 per cent abv and a retail price of between £1.69 and £1.99 for a 50cl bottle.

Woodrow joins Morrisons

Morrisons has appointed Arabella Woodrow MW head of its wine buying team. Woodrow, who was previously business development manager at Myliko, joined the supermarket as wine development manager on Oct 15. Morrisons' senior spirits buyer Jane Pearson has been made a Keeper of the Quaich, for her work in the category.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
