Fairtrade wines court UK off-trade at second tasting event

19 October, 2007

More than 120 Fairtrade wines from 18 producers will be available to taste at the second annual tasting next month.

Wines from co-operatives in

Argentina, Chile and South Africa will be on show at the event at Vinopolis in London on Nov 1 with a wider range than last year.

Winners of the first Fairtrade Wine Awards, organised by a committee of the UK wine trade, will be announced at the tasting.

Chairman Nick Day, of importer Ehrmanns, said: "It is great to be working with so many licensees who are committed to promoting and distributing their Fairtrade wines as widely as possible."

Emma Sundt, business development officer at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: "The UK is by far the biggest consumer of Fairtrade wine, with 2.5 million litres sold last year alone, representing a market value of £7 million."

The exhibitors, who are also UK Fairtrade Committee members, are La Riojana, The Co-op, Ehrmanns, Equality Wines, Origin Wine, PLB Group, Arlington Vintners, Traidcraft and Brand New World.

What makes wine special

Reaching the 50th instalment of Hemmingís Way is hardly the biggest milestone, but I donít need much of an excuse to pour myself a glass of champagne before getting dressed. Itís a better reason than I had for all 49 other instalments, anyway. Not that that stopped me.
