Hunter joined Bass Brewers' marketing department in 1989 and played a key role in the growth of Carling between 1996 and 2005. His role expanded into exports after Coors bought Bass in 2002. When Coors merged with Molson he moved to Canada to oversee sales and marketing there as chief commercial officer.
Hunter said: "I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead Coors Brewers at an exciting time for the company.
"The company has a great brand portfolio and great people who are driving enormous change. My focus will be building on this strong base for the future."
Molson Coors chief executive Leo Kiely said: "Mark has extensive knowledge of and insight into the UK market. His keen sense of how to market brands in different cultures and his strategic thinking ability will be key to our Europe and Asia business."
