Are you running any special offers for the Rugby World Cup final?

"I'm with Booker's Customer Retail Club, which decides what's on promotion. They have some good offers, so I don't have room for any more, but I'll be putting more Guinness out on the day."

Geoffrey Bull

GB's Off-licence

Dunkirk, Nottingham

"We'll have promotions on eight-packs of lager, and we're offering two bottles of red and white Italian wine for a fiver, because the ladies like that when they're watching the rugby. I'm sure it will help boost sales."

Richard Cook

University Wines

Plymouth, Devon

"No, the only time we have promotions is at Christmas."

Kultar Chandler

Jobi's Off-licence, Stoke-

on-Trent, Staffordshire

"The rugby does make a difference to sales, but we couldn't really do much in the way of promotion because we mostly sell

take-out draft beers. From our perspective, we don't need to offer anything other than what we do already."

Richard Genders

The Bottle Stop

Cheadle, Cheshire

"We'll be pushing Champagne which is great for either celebration or commiseration."

Peter Stephen

Chester, Cheshire

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
