No bargain beers from web blunder

02 November, 2007

Asda almost topped all price deals on beer last week

when an error on its website meant it was offering bottles for just half a penny each.

For 12 hours, the retailer was offering 20 packs of Heineken for

10p, instead of £10, which led to hundreds of shoppers logging on to take advantage of the deal.

However, an Asda spokeswoman said a disclamer on the website meant the supermarket would not be honouring the deal, which it removed at 12am on Thursday.

She said: "We have apologised to customers. It was human error which occurred despite our regular checks. The online team and our beer department have written letters apologising about the mistake to all customers who did purchase the beer.

"We'd just announced lots of price cuts earlier that day too, so we felt very silly."
