Fetzer was one of 10 winners in the
Organisation, Association or Team
category, and was honoured for banning the use of ozone-depleting methyl bromide in vineyard operations. It phased out the chemical in favour of more eco-friendly methods during the 1990s, and now focuses on a tightly-run pest management programme, improved field sanitation, resistant root stocks, cover crops and compost.
All the winery's vineyards are certified organic , a nd it is commit ted to environmental protection, buying renewable power, minimising energy and water use where possible, and installing solar power .
The EPA's Stratospheric Ozone Protection Awards recogni se corporations, associations, teams and individuals that have demonstrated "exceptional leadership and personal dedication in either technical achievements in eliminating ozone-depleting substances or protecting the public from the effects of exposure to increased ultraviolet radiation".
