Double whammy for Chilean wines

Chilean wines scooped the two top prizes at the first Fairtrade Wine Awards.

As well as winning the best Chilean white and best Chilean red wine accolades , Equality Fairtrade Sauvignon Blanc and the Co-op's Fairtrade Chilean Carmenère from Los Robles were voted best white and red wines overall.

The awards were organised by the UK Fairtrade Wines Committee.

Harriet Lamb, executive director, revealed the winners at the second annual Fairtrade Wines Tasting at Vinopolis

in London.

"These wines are not only top quality for the consumers, but also open the door to improved quality of life for the farmers and workers," Lamb said.

Wine writers including Liz Morcom MW, Sally Easton MW and Patricia Langton, and Marks & Spencer buyer Jo Ahearne

were among the panel judging the competition, which featured 48

wines from the three countries where Fairtrade-accredited wines are


Four other wines made it through to the final shortlist - Co-op Fairtrade Torrontés/Chardonnay, La Riojana

(Best Argentinian White); Origin

Fairhills Mendoza Shiraz/Tempranillo (Best Argentinian Red); Co-op

Fairtrade South African Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (Best South African White) and Isabelo Pinotage/Cabernet Sauvignon (Best South African


According to the Fairtrade Foundation, 2.5 million litres of Fairtrade wine were sold in the UK last year alone, representing a market value of

£7 million.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
