BIVB reports rise in Burgundy sales

Sales of Burgundy wines rose 22 per cent in value during the first half of last year, indicating growing consumer interest in the region's wines.

The UK remains the biggest export market for Burgundy, with volumes rising 5 per cent, according to the figures released by the Bureau Interprofessionel des Vins de Bourgogne at the annual Burgundy trade tasting in London yesterday.

Anne Parent, president of the communication committee of the BIVB, said Burgundy sales were defiant at a time when interest in French wine in the UK had been declining.

She said: "I think the quality of Burgundy has improved and we have a young generation of winemakers who are driving things forward.

"The BIVB has also made a lot of efforts with the trade and we are now more efficient in promoting our wines."

Jean-Pierre Nié, founder of Beaune based wine company La Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois, said efforts made to improve working practices in vineyards and a comprehensive campaign by the BIVB were paying off.

He said: "I think we are seeing a renaissance for Burgundy wines. Things are getting better and I feel there is more interest. Certainly I have noticed more Burgundy wine stocked in the shops over here on my visit."
