Pick five: Australian wines at Philglas & Swiggot

25 January, 2008

Rogers & PetersenYarra Valley Pinot Noir 2006 £17.99 Moonambel Shiraz 2006 £16.99

Philglas & Swiggot's own brand, created with top Australian winemaker Mac Forbes from fruit from single vineyards.

Two Hands Bad Impersonator Shiraz 2005 £24.99

Groucho Marx features on the label of this number from popular producer Two Hands, which sources grapes from across Australia's producing regions. A favourite of actor Jack Davenport - of This Life and Pirates of the Caribbean fame - apparently.

Port Phillip Chardonnay £13.99

This wine, and its Pinot Noir stablemate, are "massively popular" with Philglas's clientele, offering elegance, minerality, subtlety and great value, Rogers says. "It's like a Chablis that's been to charm school."

Bishop Shiraz, Ben Glaetzer Barossa Valley 2006 £17.50

"People like a lot of fruit if there's tannin as well," Rogers says.

De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon 2005 £16.50

One of a wide range of Australian stickies at the shop.

What makes wine special

Reaching the 50th instalment of Hemmingís Way is hardly the biggest milestone, but I donít need much of an excuse to pour myself a glass of champagne before getting dressed. Itís a better reason than I had for all 49 other instalments, anyway. Not that that stopped me.
