Ports jump on the rosÚ bandwagon

A pair of pink ports have been launched in the UK as produ cers and retailers hope to capitalise on the rosÚ trend.

Marks & Spencer Pink Port and Croft Pink are made from classic red port grapes but are lighter in style than other ports due to colour extraction, cold settling and cool fermentation during vinification.

M&S said it hoped to attract a "far more varied consumer demographic" and help boost port consumption outside the festive season with its new port, which is priced at ú7.99.

The style is described as light with a palate of "ripe berry and fruit flavours" and a crisp dry finish. It is designed to be drunk chilled, or over ice.

Croft said it hoped its new port would prove popular with women. Managing director Adrian Bridge added: "The port industry needs innovation to raise awareness of port as a contemporary product which is why, three years ago, I came up with the idea of producing a lighter style of port. This will attract new consumers to the category and at the same time deseasonalise consumption."
