Research highlights organic prospects

Organic and biodynamic wines are the biggest growth area for independent wine retailers, according to exclusive research carried out by OLN.

Twenty-four per cent of stores now describe the category as one of their specialities, a 20 per cent increase on the figure for 2007. Thirty-one per cent of the 200 respondents in this year's audit of the independent wine merchants sector say sales of organic and biodynamic wines are growing. Forty-seven per cent describe sales as stable.

More than half

the respondents said they intend to buy more organic or biodynamic wines in the coming year, but 48 per cent said they would not be increasing their listings. The main objections were that "there is no demand" (42.5 per cent); "it's overpriced" (19 per cent) and "quality is not good enough" (13 per cent).

Th e research

reveals some important findings about the overall performance of independent wine merchants in 2007, average bottle prices, the countries

in and out of favour, the most effective promotions and the role of wholesaling.
