Bennetts Fine Wines, of Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, has unveiled a star-studded tasting programme at the nearby Cotswold House Hotel. On Feb 27 Livio Felluga's export director Matteo Burani will host a £70-a-head dinner, matching a selection of Friuli wines with four courses. On March 20 Jean-Claude Boisset winemaker Gregory Patriat will host an £85-a-head Burgundy dinner and on April 9 Nicolas Jaboulet will host an £80-a-head Rhône dinner.

Classic Wine has closed its five-year-old store in Groomsport, County Down, and relocated to Ballyhackamore in Belfast. The new shop offers 16 wines for sampling every day from Northern Ireland's only ENO wine tasting machine.

Stainton Wines,

of Kendal , is relocating its business from Finkle Street to Station Yard. The company said the move would offer customers "ample parking and easier access".

Corks Out, of Warrington, is supporting Breast Cancer Care by donating 10 per cent of sales of "pink" wines from Feb 8-14. Free gift wrapping will be provided. The retailer is also organising a wine tasting at the Studio Art Gallery.

Taurus Wines, of Bramley, Guildford, is holding this year's summer festival on June 4. The event will take place in the courtyard in front of the shop and will take the form of a farmers' market, with 30 suppliers

offering some 300 wines, beers and spirits. The event will raise funds for the renovation of a local farm into a centre for young adults with learning difficulties.

Sussex Wine Company, of Eastbourne, is the sponsor of the 2008 Rye Bay Scallop Festival, and will be hosting a Sussex wine tasting event at Rye's Fish Cafe. The date of the festival is yet to be confirmed.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
