Less paperwork and I'd get to talk to friends

House restoration in Normandy or sailing with my children

- which is more peaceful and a great way to teach children how they can be responsible and in control of their destiny.

What alcoholic drink do you most resemble?

Alsace wines, which are generally great fun, underrated and multi-faceted with hidden depths and also sold in unfashionabl y-shaped containers.

What would you recommend to a customer wanting to splash out?

Three bottles of everything on the bin end list and a bottle of Pol Roger Vintage Champagne to celebrate his superb choice.

What's the most unusual thing that has happened to you in your shop?

After a break-in, the thief came in to pay for all the damage


Is there such a thing as an irresponsible drink?

No just irresponsible drinkers. Apart from, of course, Pedro Ximenez

sherry poured over vanilla ice cream

- it's irresponsible and fattening. I blame the vanilla in the ice cream.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise your friends .

I never meant to become a wine merchant.

If you weren't a wine retailer, what would you be doing?

Farming in Burgundy . I am sure you can work out what and why.

If you could change one thing about the drinks industry what would it be

The government's perception as to the causes of and potential solutions

to alcohol misuse, which may well be next through the mill after tobacco. Remember the tyre manufacturers who point out

"Power is nothing without control ". Perhaps the current stance, after handing power to Brussels, is if you have no power then control is everything.

Hofmeister may need more than the bear essentials to succeed

So, George The Bear is back. Itís hard for some of us oldies to fathom, but there are those under, say, 40 who canít actually remember Hofmeister and feel the cultural jolt supplied by the return of both the bear and the beer whose marketing campaigns it used to front.
