CIVB launches eco wine study

Members of Bordeaux’s wine trade will meet in Bordeaux’s Palais de Congres today to launch the Bilan Carbone, a study to measure the environmental impact of the industry’s work.

The study, due to be completed in September, will assess the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated by activities involved in winemaking including vine growing, vinification, bottling and storage.

Today’s launch, hosted by the interprofessional body for Bordeaux, the CIVB, will include an outline of the study and a speech about global warming by environmental consultant Jean-Marc Jancovici.

Arnaud Descotes and Dominique Moncomble of the CIVC are also expected to attend to talk about their experiences of carrying out a similar study in Champagne.

Alain Virroneau, president of the CIVB said the study was “complex, but necessary” and urged the participation of everyone from the trade in order to “bring about good.”

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
