Sales up at Select & Save

Convenience fascia group Select & Save has grown its alcohol sales by 33 per cent in the third quarter of 2007, compared to 2006, while overall like-for-like sales grew by 10.8 per cent. Select & Save has embarked on an aggressive programme of price

cuts and promotions in a bid to beat the multiple grocers and arch-rival Bargain Booze. Tobacco sales dropped 2.3 per cent in the same period.

Cadbury names division heads

Roger Carr, a businessman who is chairman of pub group Mitchells & Butlers, among other directorships, has been named chairman of newly demerged Cadbury , while former Coors board member Wayne Sanders has become chairman of Dr Pepper Snapple Group. Cadbury Schweppes grew its confectionery revenue by 7 per cent in 2007, the group announced in its preliminary results this week. Trident grew sales by 26 per cent and Dairy Milk climbed 5 per cent.

Climate change concerns

Drought and flooding are among the main environmental factors influencing wine production, delegates at Barcelona's Climate Change

& Wine conference heard. Top winemakers at the conference, held on Feb 15 and 16, said temperature rises would put some grape -growing areas out of use permanently. The Wine Academy of Spain organised the event.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
