A guide called the Retail Toolkit for Improving Town Centre Accessibility will be sent
to thousands of retailers this month to ensure trade isn't adversely affected if councils
make changes to public transport and parking in the area.
Ed Cooke, BRC head of transport and property, said in order to make "well thought-out decisions" councils needed retailers to tell them their views, too.
"By not getting involved in town centre proposals, retailers risk changes, which harm their businesses, without them even realising they are happening," he said.
The guide sets out a series of
questions retailers can put to councils on issues such as lack of parking and loading bays , and how to respond to consultations.
