How often do you drink alcohol in a typical week?

Just 8 per cent of people drink alcohol every day, according to an opinion poll commissioned by the Wine & Spirit Trade Association, and figures from the Office of National Statistics show overall alcohol consumption is dropping. The WSTA's research


people are concerned about alcohol's impact on street violence, violence in the home and about it being a drain on the NHS. The poll also found that 65 per cent of people were opposed to the government raising taxes in a bid to tackle problem drinking - instead they thought that making parents take more responsibility, cracking down on problem licensees, making the police get tougher, better enforcement of existing legislation and improving education in schools would be the most effective ways of dealing with the issue.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
