Tesco lists local wines for local people

03 March, 2008

Tesco has announced plans to stock English and Welsh wines in stores that are local to the vineyards where they are made.

The multiple retailer will launch the five wines this month to join the five-strong English and Welsh wine range it already lists.

A rosé from Hampshire producer Wickham will go on sale in 14 stores in the same county, while Essex-based winery, Sandyford, will have its Clover Hill white and Special Reserve red wines made available in 13 stores in Essex and Cambridgeshire.

The Carr Taylor Estate’s white wine, Carr Taylor Alexis, will be listed in four stores in Sussex, and Glyndwr Welsh Sparkling wine, from the Glyndwr vineyard in the Vale of Glamorgan, will be available in four stores in Cardiff, Swansea and Carmarthen.

The new listings form part of Tesco’s drive to offer local produce to customers and follow the creation of eight regional buying offices.

Tesco’s English and Welsh wine buyer, Dave Peek, said: “Despite a challenging vintage last year, I am confident that English and Welsh wines have a bright future. Improved site selection, increased investment in the vineyards and wineries combined with developing customer interest in this category are all positive signs.”
