Call for support from suppliers

07 March, 2008

Suppliers should do more to support the independent trade, Ruth Yates, of Cheshire wine merchant Corks Out, told delegates at the Manchester SITT seminar.

She called on suppliers to draw up a strategy for the independent sector, including constructive meetings with retailers, effective promotional pricing and support for in-store tastings.

She added that suppliers should work harder on their tasting notes. "Some of them just say 'a nice fruity wine with a good finish'. We need really effective POS," she said.

Her views were echoed by Matt Harris, of Planet of the Grapes, who criticised suppliers for an inflexible approach to independents.

On one occasion, he said, a major French supplier had even demanded to interview him before it would consider supplying him as a customer.

Wines of Chile UK director Michael Cox said there was too much complacency from both retailers and suppliers and urged wine importers to think more creatively about the way they service independents.
