Logistics company JF Hillebrand has invested £1 million in the new rail service, which will run between Tilbury and Daventry on a daily basis. Each train will carry over 350,000 bottles of wine.
The service aims to take 6,000 lorries off the M25 and M1 every year,
an annual saving of 1.7 billion grammes of CO ².
It has the potential to be expanded to handle short sea deliveries from Germany and Italy, according to a spokesman . JF Hillebrand is also in talks with major retailers in the UK about the possibilty of reloading containers with cargo coming from the East Midlands area for delivery to the
